Carl Dean and Mathew Smith are two of the most passionate and driven individuals you’ll ever meet. Best friends since college, they began crafting custom wood furniture in their garage in 2010. In 2014, Carl left his hometown in Michigan to pursue a career in construction and real estate in Texas, while Mathew stayed behind to build one of the nation’s leading auto insurance agencies. Both excelled in their fields, driven by the belief that they could achieve greatness in whatever they were passionate about.
Launching Dean & Co has always been a dream for Carl. After over 15 years in construction, and an additional four years with Atwood Custom Homes, a premier builder in Southlake, and with the thrilling news of his wife expecting twins, he felt it was the perfect time to channel his experience and entrepreneurial spirit into creating Dean & Co. As word spread about their exceptional quality and craftsmanship, demand for their custom homes skyrocketed. It wasn’t long before Carl reached out to Mathew, inviting him to join this venture and build dream homes side by side once again.

Together, they complement each other’s talents like yin and yang, creating a remarkable synergy. Their clients quickly become like family, and they take pride in ensuring that the entire process is not only seamless but genuinely enjoyable.
In 2013, Mathew and Carl launched their first nonprofit startup to assist local animal shelters in Michigan, which were in urgent need of renovations to ensure the safety of both animals and caretakers.
Their journey began when they responded to a call for help from a local animal activist. Mathew and Carl offered to perform the work at cost and provide materials free of charge, but they faced obstacles from union workers in the area.
Undeterred, their shared love for animals fueled their determination to fight back. They attended city meeting after city meeting, refusing to accept no for an answer. Eventually, their persistence paid off, and they secured the right to supply free materials and labor to help the shelters. This experience not only solidified their bond but also demonstrated to the community their commitment to making a difference.
Thanks to their efforts, the shelters were able to care for more animals, ultimately saving many from euthanasia. To this day, this achievement stands as one of their proudest moments. It exemplifies their integrity and dedication to fighting for what is right—qualities that continue to define their work and impact in the community.
